DLR in Braunschweig Relies on ZwickRoell for Material Characterization

As a leading institute in the field of lightweight composite structures, the Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptive Systems at DLR’s location in Braunschweig has been researching more efficient manufacturing methods for CFRP structures as well improved analysis and design methods for several years. The company will rely on a testing machine from ZwickRoell for future fatigue testing of CFRP composites.

The high-performance material CFRP is still expensive in comparison to others and its production is complex and laborious. The use of CFRP is increasing in automotive engineering and in the manufacture of rotor blades for wind energy systems as well. In the future, the weight of CFRP structures is expected to be reduced even further. Through research of the material behavior under damage and environmental influences and for the integration of additional functions, any currently unanswered questions should be addressed. In order to draw accurate conclusions about the material behavior, the material must be tested under realistic conditions. For this purpose, the institute expanded its testing laboratory with an electrodynamic LTM testing machine from ZwickRoell.

Various CFRP material combinations are tested according to various industry standards and DLR's own standards. The testing system can display forces up to 10 kN and test frequencies up to 100 Hz. Thanks to the mobile temperature chamber, ambient temperatures of -80°C to + 250°C can be simulated for fatigue tests.

To better display local strain on the specimen, there is an option to connect up to three strain gauges that can then be evaluated using testXpert software.

Due to the integrated switching function, the LTM can also perform tensile, compression, or flexure tests.
