Double high - high-speed testing at high temperatures

The Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) is the Fraunhofer Society’s leading institute in the field of resource-efficient production and as such is closely involved in research and development for automotive and engine manufacturing. A key area of this research work is the development and optimization of intelligent production plants for the manufacture of bodywork and drive-train components. The Fraunhofer IWU in Chemnitz, Germany, has recently acquired a ZwickRoell high-speed testing machine to provide materials data which will enable even greater accuracy in its simulation calculations.

Innovative developments in automotive and engine production technology are the key focus of the Fraunhofer IWU, with efficiency technologies as the central plank of research for these industries. This research work is facilitated by a new ZwickRoell HTM high-speed testing machine which is used to determine flow curves for loading rate and temperature-dependent metallic materials. This data is required for simulation calculations used in the optimization of production plants and processes.

The testing system is employed for high-speed tensile tests on sheet-metal materials up to 20m/s at a maximum force of 100kN. Integrated induction heating allows tests at temperatures between +200°C and +1,000°C to be performed also. Strain is measured using an optical high-speed extensometer and the system is also used for compression tests (test speeds up to 20m/s) on cylindrical specimens.
