The Materials Handling Technology program at Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz) has as its primary focus the development, manufacture and dimensioning of textile transmission and load-carrying belts. To enable more realistic simulation of friction and wear on conveyor systems the Institute of Materials Handling and Plastics will in future use a ZwickRoell servo-hydraulic testing system.
The multiaxial servo-hydraulic testing system is designed for predominantly dynamic loading of components, assemblies and power-transmission mechanisms used in materials handling. The objective is to simulate load-related stress-states and determine material characteristics, together with their temperature and humidity dependence.
One of the Institute's requirements was that the structural design and the individual components selected for use should enable maximum versatility to be achieved in the testing system, as a very wide range of materials is to be tested. These include plastics, composites and metal-plastic combinations, wooden materials and high-performance fiber ropes, together with conveyor chains. The testing system is moreover to be used for both static and dynamic and horizontal and vertical loads. As well as tests at room temperature, tests under varied environmental conditions are also to be possible.
ZwickRoell's solution is an HBT100 servo-hydraulic testing machine equipped with a combined axial and torsion drive (100kN/1000Nm) and a four-column frame with T-slotted mounting platform. An additional axial actuator (Fmax 10kN), hydraulic grips (Fmax 100kN) and mechanical grips (Fmax 100kN) for use in an environmental chamber mean that this testing system is effectively a servo-hydraulic "universal testing machine". The system is supplied complete with an air-conditioning unit plus environmental chamber for simulation of a wide variety of environmental conditions.
Hydraulic crosshead height adjustment enables test-area heights up to 2.5 meters, allowing the system to be used for testing large and/or complete components. An additional lifting device further simplifies the transfer of test fixtures into the test area.
Control is via Control Cube electronics, which can be individually tailored to complex and multiaxial testing situations. In combination with Cubus testing software, Control Cube is ideal for simulation tests, ramp tests and block programs.
