Choosing the Right Specimen Grip

Test Method Selection

  • Every test requires a means of holding the specimen. Safe, reliable testing with accurate results is only possible if the specimen grip/test tool functions properly. That is why it is so important to select the right specimen grip for each test.
  • ZwickRoell's comprehensive portfolio of specimen grips and test tools covers a wide range of applications for tensile tests, compression tests, flexure tests, shear tests, and cyclic tests.

Selection According to Specimen Material/Shape

  • Differences in design and operation make each specimen grip suitable for different specimen shapes, dimensions, and material properties, and for the corresponding force and deformation ranges.
  • The specific properties of the various materials, such as hardness, strength, ductility, elasticity, and surface type or condition are key factors in selecting the right specimen grips.

Operating Principle Selection / Mechanical Requirements

  • Depending on the specimen shape, the load can be transferred either positively or non-positively. However, most tensile specimens are only suited to transfer non-positively since they are derived from wires, straps, belts, ropes, sheet metals or other sheet materials. Depending on the gripping force required and the gripping area available, you can choose between self-tensioning and externally-actuated specimen grips.
  • The mechanical requirements placed on specimen grips vary significantly, from the required force range and opening width to fluctuating temperature ranges.

Compliance with General Requirements

  • Standard specifications as well as general test requirements play an important role in your selection. For example, if specimen throughput is high, we recommend automatic application of the gripping force, as provided by pneumatic grips and hydraulic grips.
  • If several different tests must be performed, the specimen grip should be as flexible as possible. This reduces changeover, time, and costs while enhancing operating convenience.
