Automation and digitalization pose new challenges for testing in the medical technology and pharmaceutical industry

Details

In the past, companies performed automation for testing applications with a high number of identical test specimen to increase throughput. High personnel costs, the lack of personnel and the risk of high failure rates by users manually handling testing machines influence the today’s decisions for automation. Automation solutions should be more flexible, fitting to small production series, changing specimen and allow more collaborated working.

Digitalization, buzzword "Industry 4.0", has found its way into the medical technology and pharmaceutical industry. This leads to adjustments in the production processes, digitized documentation and new requirements to ensure data integrity. In addition, more and more medical products become “smart” and receive digital interfaces. Testing technology must follow suit here.

This presentation explains how testing technology has to respond to these trends. It will show examples of different levels of automated testing and examples of integrating testing technology to your warehouse database, your laboratory information management system (LIMS) and the reporting processes following regulatory requirements. Examples of tests on connected medical devices provide an outlook on a rapidly growing market segment.
