Gas Supply Emergency Plan - How is ZwickRoell prepared to respond to a possible bottleneck?

On March 30, 2022, the Federal Ministry of Economics declared the warning level of the gas (supply) emergency plan and on June 23, 2022, earlier than expected, the alert level followed. On July 11, Nordstream 1 was shut down for maintenance as initially planned. Gas bottlenecks in Fall 2022 and Winter 2022/2023 threaten the German economy, particularly affecting the industry sector.

What does this mean for ZwickRoell Ulm and for you as our customer?

1.    Gas dependence: ZwickRoell operates powder-coating and wet-painting equipment whose dryers run on gas firing.

Risk: Specification-compliant (optics, haptics) surfaces for certain sheet metal and machining items could no longer be generated => deliverability risk.

Response: The conversion to hybrid solutions (i.e. operation of dryers with electrical power or with gas) was commissioned in early July. Implementation will take place by the end of Q3/2022.

Conclusion: The risk of limited deliverability has been narrowed down to only a few product groups and for a short period of time. Please contact us should you have any questions.

2.    Gas dependence: ZwickRoell operates boilers and a cogeneration power plant for hot water generation for building heating, which run on gas firing.

Risk: Lack of thermal heat would endanger the operation of the location in case of lower outside temperatures => operability risk.

Response: The existing hot water storage tanks will be retrofitted with electric cartridge heaters to reduce our dependence on gas. An emergency plan is in place to significantly reduce (“save”) the heating capacity required to operate our premises in the event of a supply bottleneck.  Buildings or sections of buildings will be shut down (frost-proof) and office areas in other buildings will be combined in order to use the available heating capacity effectively. For the operating areas, additional decentralized heating solutions (based on workspaces/areas) will be procured (completed by the end of 8/2022)

Conclusion: The risk of limited operability has therefore been excluded to the extent possible.
