Why you should attend the ZwickRoell Materials Testing Forum
Following on from the success of last year's event, we are delighted to announce that the ZwickRoell Materials Testing Forum will return this year from Tuesday 16th April - Thursday 18th April 2024.
During the Materials Testing Forum you will have the opportunity to learn about the latest trends, technology and developments in the field of materials testing whilst also being able to see live demonstrations delivered by our in-house experts.
This year we will host 18 seminars across the three days of the Materials Testing Forum with special guest speakers sharing research, case studies, knowledge and expertise on materials testing.

Tuesday 16th April
Seminars will feature talks on testing with hydrogen, electrification, high temperature and testing materials for wind farms.
Automotive, Aerospace & Metals
Wednesday 17th April
Seminars will feature talks on the different types of testing that is carried out in the Automotive, Aerospace and Metals industries.
Medical & Pharmaceutical
Thursday 18th April
Seminars will feature talks on syringe testing, data handling across global sites, on body delivery systems and many more.

Test Concept & Design Engineer
John Durston is a Test Concept & Design Engineer with almost 25 years experience at Airbus, covering many key aspects of Structures Test: from project management, to test machine operations, data acquisition, and optimization of load application. John now specializes in Test Concept & Design: using software to design and stress bespoke test rigs that cover a broad spectrum of scale and Airbus product; and a technical diversity ranging from static & fatigue, to functional, and - most recently - cryogenic systems.

Dr Chen received his BEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Cardiff University, UK, in 2012 and 2015, respectively. Currently, he is a Senior Lecturer in High Voltage Engineering and the Associate Dean for Research Impact within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, The University of Manchester. His research interests include environmentally sound replacement of SF6 for the power industry, insulation reliability of dynamic cable for floating offshore wind and high voltage systems used in transportation applications. He is also the Secretary of Cigré International Working Group B3/A3.59: Guidelines for SF6 end-of-life treatment of transmission & distribution equipment (>1 kV) in substations.

Sector Development Lead Hydrogen and Clean Energy
Huw Sullivan leads strategy and engagement for Clean Energy at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) with a specific focus on Hydrogen. The MTC is engaged in multiple cross-sector initiatives supporting the growth of the Hydrogen economy, focused on the advanced manufacture and build of next generation solutions for hydrogen production, hydrogen distribution and storage and hydrogen end use. Prior to joining the MTC Huw was head of Innovation at Cadent Gas, formerly National Grid Gas and was involved in some of the pioneering work associated with Hydrogen as a vector to decarbonise heat, including the gas blending Hydeploy project and the Hydrogen production, distribution and CCUS project HyNet North West.

Graduating with a Doctorate in Materials Science in 1997 from Swansea University, and subsequently with an MBA from the University of Warwick in 2001, Barrie is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and holds Chartered Engineer status. For over 20 years he has held senior positions across the steel and metals industries at leading manufacturers, directing a range of technical and research programmes and building excellent customer relationships across the sector. Since 2019, Barrie has been Director of Industrial Research at the Steel & Metals Institute, an open access innovation centre based at Swansea University. In this role, he collaborates with a wide range of partners to develop both public and privately funded research aligned to industry needs, with a focus on decarbonisation and product development. The development and evolution of hydrogen testing capabilities has been at the forefront of the facility's growth and will continue to be a key focus to support the requirements of industrial stakeholders moving forward.

Thomas graduated from Graz University of Technology (Austria) in Mechanical Engineering before going on to complete his PhD in the field of variable geometry combustion of gas turbines. Thomas joined ZwickRoell in 2012 in Fürstenfeld as Product Manager and Sales Engineer. In 2023 Thomas became Head of Sales.

Lee Fraser-Price has a BSc (hons) in Forensics and Criminology and currently works as a Principal Device Scientist / Laboratory Team Leader with 15 years’ experience in the Medical Device industry, 9 of which have been working for Teva Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Throughout his career, Lee has acted as the Lead Device Scientist / Technical Expert across multiple, billion-dollar projects, with a specialisation in the physical/functional testing and development of medical devices and combination products.

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Dr Chris Holland is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield. Prior to this he studied Biology and obtained his doctorate from Oxford University. His group’s research uses tools developed for the physical sciences to better understand how processing effects performance in natural materials, with a focus on relating protein hydration to function (www.naturalmaterialsgroup.com). Outside the lab, he is an Associate Editor for ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering and board member of the IoM3 Natural Materials Group.

Dr Sophie Cox is an Associate Professor and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at the University of Birmingham. Her research is focused on fully exploiting additive manufacturing technologies to add value within healthcare. She leads the University's Centre for Custom Medical Devices, a facility focused on bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial application of laser powder bed fusion in the medical devices sector.
