Modularity at high test forces

The testing system was specially developed to test composite specimens with high test forces up to 600 kN at ambient temperature or in a temperature range of -60 °C to +350 °C.

Normally, a 100 kN or 250 kN testing machine is sufficient for carrying out tensile tests, compression tests, shear tests or other tests such as bending tests or ILSS when using the standard specimen geometry defined in the respective industry standards. For this purpose, ZwickRoell has developed a modular testing machine for composites with which up to 21 test methods and approx. 120 test standards can be performed. With larger specimen geometries and laminate thicknesses, however, higher test loads can be easily achieved, especially with multidirectional laminates made of carbon fiber-reinforced composites. This testing system is used for tests that require test forces up to 600 kN based on the corresponding specimen sizes.

Typical standards for this testing machine

Airbus AITM 1-0007

The Airbus standard AITM 1-0007 for tensile tests on multidirectional laminates defines specimen geometries for the plain tension, open-hole tension (OHT) and filled-hole tension (FHT) tests as a function of laminate thickness. While a 100 kN testing machine is recommended for specimens with laminate thicknesses in the 2-4 mm range and a 200 kN testing machine for specimens with laminate thicknesses in the 4-7 mm range, a testing machine with a maximum force of at least 500 kN is required to carry out tensile tests with laminate thicknesses of 7 - 12 mm.

Airbus AITM 1-0008

Similarly, the Airbus standard AITM 1-0008 defines sample geometries for compression tests on multidirectional laminates for plain compression, open-hole compression (OHC) and filled-hole compression (FHC) tests depending on the laminate thickness. Specimen type A3 for plain compression tests with laminate thicknesses in the 7-12 mm range is defined for a force range up to 500 kN and requires a corresponding testing machine for high test forces.

Compression after impact (CAI) tests

In addition to the above-mentioned plain, open-hole and filled-hole tension and compression tests, CAI tests (compression after impact tests) can also be carried out on the 600 kN testing machine. Furthermore, the modular 600 kN testing machine can also be used to carry out tensile and compression tests at component level or to test structural elements. The use of an adapter system ensures the greatest possible modularity and the conversion from the tensile to the compression test with corresponding test fixtures is possible without any problems, even in the temperature test.

Specimen grips

ZwickRoell uses special hydraulic tensile grips that allow standard compression tests and compression tests requiring stable longitudinal guidance to be carried out in compliance with industry standards.

Stable longitudinal guidance on the specimen grip prevents lateral movement that could otherwise affect the test result. The jaws are equipped with a soft load introduction feature that ensures gentle application of force at the jaw end to prevent specimen damage. In addition to load application via clamping (shear loading), combined loading is also possible, whereby the specimen is additionally supported at the ends via a reference surface. The reference surface must be designed to fit accurately and be resistant to wear in order to ensure that the alignment requirements are met.

Precise alignment of the specimen grip was proven within the scope of alignment measurements to Nadcap AC 7122. Verification to AITM 1-0008 for compliance of the transverse movement under load also did not present any difficulty with this test assembly. The specimen grip can be used at both ambient temperature and in a temperature range of -60 °C to +350 °C.

Optical measurement

The optical video extensometer is a high-resolution displacement and strain measurement system that can be used not only for tensile tests on composites, but also for flexure tests.

Because the measurement is non-contact, specimens with explosive break tendencies cannot damage the extensometer.

Satisfying the most demanding safety requirements

  • The statutory safety requirements of the EC Machinery Directive are implemented in all materials testing machines and an EC Declaration of Conformity is provided.
  • Only the latest safety technology and proven industrial components are used.
  • The highest level of safety for the operator, the test results, the specimen material, and the testing system are guaranteed.

Ready for the Next Generation

  • Modular design means that the testing system can be re-equipped or upgraded whenever required.
  • Moreover, testControl II control electronics are compatible with future-generation ZwickRoell software.
  • Even after a product has been discontinued, spare parts remain available for a minimum of 10 years.
