Materials Testing up to 400 °C—Dyneon Uses Testing Technology from ZwickRoell

Dyneon GmbH, a 3M company and part of the Advanced Materials Division, is one of the world’s leading fluoropolymer producers. Dyneon specializes in the development, production, and sales of fluoroelastomers, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), fluorothermoplastics, and specialty additives. For research on the use of these products in a wide temperature range, the company chose a special testing system from ZwickRoell.

Dyneon GmbH products are sold under the 3M™ Dyneon™ and 3M™ Dynamar™ brands. Because of the outstanding properties of these high-performance polymers, including temperature and chemical resistance, electric insulation, and flexibility, the safety and lifetime of plants, machines, and engines are increased.

To test the properties of the products as close as possible to their actual future application, the company is using a ZwickRoell materials testing machine with a special temperature chamber. Tensile, compression, and flexure tests can be performed in a temperature range of -70 to +400 °C. Because of the possible emission of gases from testing PTFE at temperatures higher than approximately +300 °C, a special safety enclosure is installed, which is connected to the company’s vacuum system.

The testing system is equipped with a modular plug system for specimen grips and test fixtures, which allows for quick changes of the tools required for the different tests and materials to be used.
