Ring Crush Test (RCT)

ISO 12192 or TAPPI T 822

The ring crush test (RCT) is used to determine the ring crush resistance of a paper strip formed into a ring with a standardized length and width. This test is performed to ISO 12192 and TAPPI T 822.

Purpose of the test

The ring crush test is similar to the short-span compression test in that the strength of the liner or fluting is measured both in the machine direction and perpendicular to it. It is important that force application to the specimen is exactly perpendicular during these tests.
The results of this test are also highly dependent on proper specimen preparation. Specimen and guides must be exactly parallel to ensure accurate determination of the ring crush strength. As the ring crush test provides information about specimen buckling behavior rather than crush behavior, it is increasingly being replaced by the short-span compression test.

Ring crush test (RCT) with ZwickRoell ISO 12192 or Tappi T 822

Function description:

  • The ring crush test device (RCT) consists of a base plate (bottom part) and nine discs (upper part).
  • The base plate has a tangential insertion slot. The specimen is pushed into the free gap between the ring of the base plate and the inserted disc.

Benefits:

  • Inserts for the ring crush test fit easily into the guided compression plates.
  • Optimum specimen parallelism is achieved with the ZwickRoell strip-cutter.
  • Precision-guided compression platens ensure extremely high lateral stiffness, guaranteeing reproducible determination of characteristic values.
  • The compression test kit is suitable for the ring crush test (RCT) described here. As well as for the edge crush test (ECT) on corrugated board to DIN EN ISO 3037 and TAPPI T 811, the flat crush test (FCT) on single-sided and single-wall corrugated board to ISO 3035, EN 23035 and TAPPI T 825, and the corrugated medium test (CMT) to ISO 7263-1/-2 and TAPPI T 809.
