High-Speed Tensile Tests: Findings from ISO Standardization

High-speed tensile tests are typically used for standardized specimens to generate materials data for crash simulation purposes. As more and more powerful simulation software tools become available, there is also an increasing interest in generating materials data. Laboratories in the automotive industry and in R&D, as well as at the materials producer site, perform high-speed tensile tests, even though it is difficult to validate single measurement curves due to a lack of comparison options. Within the framework of the standardization project ISO 22183, experts from different countries have performed comparison tests and developed criteria to recognize systematic issues with the test setup or the test method. This project supplied some interesting results that will be presented here.  


The ZwickRoell Polymer Testing Lab

ZwickRoell supplies all types of equipment needed for the mechanical testing of plastics. This includes equipment to determine static, dynamic and high-speed properties such as tensile, flexural, compression and shear, as well as creep machines for the long-term application of force or strain, instruments to measure impact properties, such as conventional Charpy, Izod and tensile-impact, and instrumented impact systems, also available as drop-weight testing machines. There are several versions of melt flow plastometers, ranging from simple MFR types to user friendly automatic instruments. Thermal properties are measured by using HDT and VST instruments. Tensile Testing According to ISO 527

The standard for tensile tests on plastics, ISO 527, covers all types of plastics, plastic film and fiber-reinforced composites. It is possibly the most widely used standard in the field of the mechanical testing of polymers. The presenter of this webinar has followed the development of this standard over the last 20 years as a member of the responsible ISO and DIN committees. The main aspects of the standard will be presented and background information on several specific points will be given. The question and answer session at the end of the presentation will allow participants to submit their questions.

Impact Testing on Polymers - Conventional and Instrumented

Pendulum impact testers determine the impact energy absorbed by a standardized specimen up to break by measuring the height of rise of the pendulum hammer after impact. The result is impact strength or notched impact strength, which is indicated in relation to area, for example in kJ/m². We will give an overview of the standard test methods (Charpy; Izod, Dynstat,…) and explain the difference between a conventional and instrumented impact test.
