Common fatigue tests
Materials and components may fail prematurely under oscillating loads. For this reason, the behavior of materials under alternating mechanical loading is an important decision criterion, for which the necessary data are obtained through testing.
There are two categories of fatigue in materials testing:
Crack growth curve
The crack growth of a material is described in the crack growth curve. This curve is divided into three regions:
- Region I: low crack growth rate; initial dKth value at which crack growth is just beginning
- Region II: constant crack growth rate; is mathematically described with the Paris straight line
- Region III: high crack growth rate; ends with fracture K1C
Composites testing system 600 kN
In most cases, machines with test forces of up to 250 kN are sufficient for tests on composites. However, in the aerospace, wind power or construction industries, larger test forces may be required depending on customer specifications.
Due to the larger load on components in these particular fields, it is sometimes necessary to test specimens with a larger cross-section. Determining the characteristic values helps to ensure the reliability and performance of the material, even for large components.
ZwickRoell offers an electromechanical testing machine for test loads up to 600 kN, which can be used to perform tests on these specimens with large cross-sections. Specially adapted test tools ensure reliable testing of the composite specimens. In addition, all available ZwickRoell standard tools can be used for composite testing.
