ZwickRoell - our history

From the first materials testing machines of the 1870s, to Jakob Amsler-Laffon's planimeter, to the sheet metal testing machine R1, a common thread runs through our history: the commitment to continually reimagine materials testing.
Each development represents progress and precision, setting new standards. Our goal remains unchanged:

We are continuously advancing materials testing and creating solutions specifically tailored to our customers' needs – yesterday, today, and in the future.

1854

The origins of Amsler

In 1854, mathematician Jakob Amsler-Laffon invented the planimeter for precise area measurement and founded the company Amsler in Switzerland. His innovations, including the integrator, were used worldwide in technology and engineering. The 1880s saw the introduction of the first materials testing machines, marking a significant step toward modern testing technology. In 1982, Roell acquired the Amsler company.

1870

MFL Mannheim

Until 1870, the machine factory in Mannheim operated under the name of its three partners: Schenck, Mohr & Elsässer. After Hermann Mohr's nephew, Gustav Federhaff, joined the company, it became known worldwide as Mohr & Federhaff – a manufacturer of cranes, elevators and materials testing machines. In 1986, Roell acquired the MFL company.

1920

The origins of Roell

In 1920, Paul Roell and Alfred Korthaus founded the company, which specialized in developing and building materials testing machines. As early as the 1920s, the manually operated sheet metal deep-drawing testing machine, type R1, marked the beginning of a new generation of forming tests – robust, reliable and with integrated hydraulic functions. The machines have been successfully used across Europe. After 1952, Werner Paul Roell took over the company's management, and later his son, Dr. Jan Stefan Roell, continued to develop the Roell Group.

1950er

Origin: Zwick in Einsingen

In 1938, Franz Zwick Sr. founded the company in Einsingen. Together with designer Max Späth, who contributed his experience in materials testing, Zwick developed its first materials testing machines, marking its entry into a new business area. In the 1950s, a broad portfolio of materials testing machines was developed. A milestone followed in 1956 with the Z600 – the first tensile testing machine featuring electronic force measurement. It set new standards in precision and innovation for materials testing and continues to shape the company's development to this day.

1990er

ZwickRoell goes global

By the 1990s, ZwickRoell was already a leading provider of static materials testing. With the merger of Zwick and Roell in 1992, the company's expertise expanded to include dynamic testing systems, laying the foundation for the Company Group as it is today. Another milestone was the launch of the testXpert testing software, which set new standards in ease of use and efficiency. Starting with around 400 employees, the company evolved into a global market leader and a modern industrial enterprise.

Today & Tomorrow

Today, ZwickRoell is a global family-owned company with over 1,800 employees worldwide. Together, they aim to support customers in developing better products through expertise, innovation and technical precision. The company operates in over 50 countries through its own locations, service teams and partners. Values like openness, passion and courage shape the company's culture. Now in its fourth generation and with an eye on the next, the goal remains clear: sustainable growth and the continued advancement of materials testing.

Accreditations, quality and certificates

At ZwickRoell, we ensure that tests remain compliant with standards, traceable and globally comparable through our globally accredited calibration laboratories that meet ISO/IEC 17025, certified processes and recognized standards. This is how we build the foundation for trust – in results, in processes and in decisions.
