Puncture test on corrugated board to DIN 53142

DIN 53142-2 vs. DIN 53142-1

The puncture test is a proven test method for determining the resistance of corrugated board to mechanical stress. The test is suitable for packaging solutions where high impact resistance is required, e.g., for export packaging, technical packaging, or products with increased protection requirements.

The puncture test measures the energy required to puncture corrugated board. DIN 53142-1 specifies for the testing instrument a pendulum impact tester, while DIN 53142-2 specifies a linear path of the impactor, such as is present with a materials testing machine. As the conditions for reliable measurements with pendulum impact testers are more difficult to meet and moreover, a continuous force displacement curve is recorded with materials testing machines, ZwickRoell supports the measurement type defined in DIN 53142-2.

In the puncture test to DIN 53142-2, the use of a pyramid puncture head causes the material to be loaded in all spatial directions. During this process, combined tensile, compression, flexural and shear forces occur. The result obtained in this test is the energy absorbed in puncturing the material.

Advantages of testing with materials testing machines to DIN 53142-2 vs. DIN 53142-1 with pendulum impact testers

  • The results obtained by performing puncture tests using materials testing machines generally show significantly less scatter than those from the pendulum impact testers typically employed. Extensive tests were carried out in collaboration with the Institute for Corrugated Board Research and Testing (wfp) to correlate LPET tests in accordance with DIN 53142-2 and PET tests with pendulum impact testers. The result was that both test types are comparable with an uncertainty of 5% (standard deviation).
  • Other benefits of materials testing machines over pendulum impact testers (DIN 53142-1) include absence of weight changing, no distorting oscillations, no fiddling with retaining collars, electronic recording of force and travel, and significantly larger measurement range.
  • Theoretically, materials from papers with a mass per unit area of 80 g/m² right up to heavy-duty corrugated board 17 mm thick and an energy of approx. 40 joules can be tested without retooling.
  • An additional benefit is that the machine pulls the pyramid back through the board with no difficulty after the test. A collar as with the pendulum impact tester is no longer required.

All these factors make the testing machine an easier and safer, and a more reliable option.

ZwickRoell test equipment for puncture test to DIN 53142-2

ZwickRoell universal testing machines with a special LPET puncture fixture are used for the puncture test to DIN 53142-2:

  • The pyramid-shaped impactor is pressed linearly through the specimen while the force-displacement curve is integrated between predefined limits. The lower limit equals a force of 0.5 N; the upper limit is the path of the penetration pyramid of 25 mm plus the specimen thickness.
  • The testXpert testing software automatically determines the specimen thickness in the measurement cycle so that the tester does not have to measure the specimen thickness individually for each specimen. A tester simply places the specimen between the clamping plates of the test device and starts the test. Everything else is done by testXpert — efficiently, precisely and in accordance with standards.
