Fatigue Testing Reimagined: Why Electrodynamic Drives are (often) the Better Choice

The requirements for modern testing technology have changed fundamentally in recent years. More and more companies are under pressure not only to test precisely and reliably, but also to work flexibly, energy-efficiently and sustainably. At the same time, expectations of user-friendliness and automation in the testing laboratory are increasing. In this stress field, electrodynamic testing machines such as the LTM from ZwickRoell are setting new standards – and replacing conventional servohydraulic systems in many areas.

Less energy, more performance

While servohydraulic testing machines have a permanently increased energy requirement – even when idling, for example, the hydraulic oil in the tank must be cooled, the electrodynamic testing machine LTM does not require oil due to the electric drive concept. The integrated electromagnetic drive operates almost silently and requires very little energy when at a standstill. Only when actually tested does the energy requirement increase, but this is still lower compared to servohydraulic testing machines. In numbers, this means: up to 80% less energy consumption compared to servohydraulic systems.

Maintenance? Practically unnecessary.

Anyone who performs servohydraulic testing is familiar with this: regular oil changes, seal replacements, replacement of hoses after six years at the latest – all of which require effort that costs time and money. The LTM, on the other hand, is virtually maintenance-free. Occasional regreasing of certain components is sufficient. This can be done by the user using the supplied maintenance instructions.

Precision meets ergonomics

The patented drive system with a hollow rotor enables precise position measurement directly in the drive – protected from external influences such as temperature or mechanical loading. At the same time, the machine concept impresses with a compact footprint, high stiffness and ergonomic design for easy operation.

One system for numerous applications

Thanks to its modular design, the LTM linear motor testing machine is suitable for a wide range of applications, including:

  • Biomechanical testing of spinal, hip, and dental implants (e.g. to ASTM F1717), also in a physiological environment at 37°C.
  • Plastic testing including S-N curves and DMA under the influence of temperature.
  • Metallic materials such as gears or tensile/compression specimens in alternating cycles.
  • Automotive components such as engine mounts, exhaust compensators, or hybrid components.
  • Electronics and electrical engineering, e.g. soldered joints, fuses, or printed circuit boards.
  • Battery technology, e.g. welded joints or cell housings – also during temperature tests.

Who is it for?

Whether entry-level or high-end laboratory – with test loads from 1 kN to 10 kN and a wide range of accessories, the LTM offers maximum flexibility. The LTM is also available with integrated torsion drives from 10 Nm to 100 Nm. Accessories can also be used across all models – this ensures investment security and reduces costs.

Conclusion

The LTM electrodynamic machine is more than just a testing machine – it is a response to the requirements of modern material and component testing. Energy-efficient, low-maintenance, quiet and versatile, it is the perfect solution for companies and universities that want to test in a future-proof, sustainable, and precise manner – without any compromises.
