Grippers checked with ZwickRoell testing machine

Around the world Schunk is regarded as the leading exponent in clamping technology and gripping systems. This innovative family concern has a standard range covering over 11,000 components. These include tool-holder systems, lathe chucks, stationary clamping systems and jaws, together with gripping, rotary and linear modules, robot accessories and components for modular high-performance assembly. For product evaluations on new grippers Schunk uses a ZwickRoell testing system.

The extensive product-range and the large number of different tests involved place severe demands on a testing machine For product evaluation and specification of new grippers, Schunk has opted for a testing machine with superimposed torsion up to 1000 Nm, together with an axial force of 250 kN. As this is mainly used in R&D, a high degree of flexibility is required with regard to torque and the force sensors used.

The testing machine possesses two separate test areas. In the upper test-area axial tests can be carried out with superimposed torsion to determine the rotary and axial clamping force of the grippers, while the lower test-area enables tensile tests to be carried out on standard specimens using integrated screw grips. These tests are mainly performed as part of goods inwards checks.

"There is no comparable manufacturer offering this level of quality and this spread of products and services," is the explanation offered by Stefan Schulz, research engineer at Schunk, for the decision to go with ZwickRoell.
