Testing of Hip Implants

A hip joint implant—also called a hip prostheses or hip endoprostheses—may be necessary in the event of stiffening of the hip joint or hip arthrosis (coxarthrosis). In general, a hip joint implant consists of a femoral stem, the femoral head, the acetabular shell and a plastic or ceramic inlay.A hip joint implant and its individual components are subjected to both static and dynamic testing.

Important test standards and tests for hip implants

Endurance properties testing stemmed femoral components and neck region of stemmed femoral components
ISO 7206-4, ISO 7206-6
Describes the high cycle fatigue test to ISO 7206-4 on the stemmed femoral components and ISO 7206-6 on the neck region of stemmed femoral components.
to Endurance properties testing stemmed femoral components and neck region of stemmed femoral components
Compression/pull-off test femoral head
ISO 7206-10
ISO 7206-10 specifies the requirements on the testing system for the determination of resistance to static load of modular femoral heads.
to Compression/pull-off test femoral head
Deformation test method acetabular shell
ISO 7206-12
ISO 7206-12 specifies a test method and the test conditions for determining short-term deformation of a press-fit acetabular component.
to Deformation test method acetabular shell
Torsion test femoral head
ISO 7206-13
ISO 7206-13 specifies a test method for the determination of resistance to torque between the femoral head and neck, or the stem.
to Torsion test femoral head
Forces for disassembly of acetabular shell / liner
ASTM F1820
The ASTM F1820 standard specifies different test methods for determining the forces for disassembly between the acetabular shell and liner

Tensile test femoral head
ASTM F2009
The ASTM F2009 standard specifies a test method for determining the required disassembly force of the taper connection between the femoral head and femoral shaft.
to Tensile test femoral head
Fatigue strength ceramic femoral heads
ASTM F2345
The ASTM F2345 standard covers determination of the static and cyclic fatigue strength of ceramic modular femoral heads.
to Fatigue strength ceramic femoral heads
Fatigue testing modular femoral stems
ASTM F2580
The ASTM F2580 standard specifies a test method for fatigue testing of metallic femoral stems with metaphyseal fixation.
