Evaluation of Ceramic Matrix Composites at Ultra-High Temperatures


Ceramic matrix composites (CMC) have a high thermal shock resistance, damage tolerance and low brittleness. The fiber reinforcement enables structural applications of ceramics, even under tensile load. Areas of application are in high-temperature lightweight components, e.g. C / SiC brake discs, SiC / SiC aircraft gas turbine components or creep-resistant Al2O3 / Al2O3 heat treatment carriers. The properties at high temperatures are currently only measurable to a limited extent due to a lack of suitable strain measuring systems and clamping tools >1200°C.
