The ZwickRoell Science Award – Promoting Science Innovation

With the annual internationally recognized ZwickRoell Science Award and presentation of the Paul Roell medal, we honor up-and-coming scientists who developed innovative test methods within the scope of their research. On June 10, the winners of the 2021 ZwickRoell Science Award were honored at the 11th Academia Day at TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology). The nearly 280 entries submitted from 25 countries demonstrate the high level of interest in current topics surrounding materials testing. With the presentation of this award, the ZwickRoell Group is making an important contribution to the promotion of innovations in science.

One of the highlights of the event is the presentation of the awards, which are endowed with a total of 8,000 euros.

This year’s winner and recipient of the Paul Roell medal is Dr. Ahmed Zouari with Mines ParisTech in France. The award recognizes his work in the Journal of Nuclear Materials “The effect of strain biaxiality on the fracture of zirconium alloy fuel cladding” (2021).

Second place went to the work submitted by Jiahui Li with the Vall d’Hebron University in Spain for her work „Catheter tip distensibility substantially influences the aspiration force of thrombectomy devices” (2021) published in the Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery.

Third place was secured by Dr. Longhui Zhang with the University of Oxford for his article „Pure shear plastic flow and failure of titanium alloys under quasi-static and dynamic torsional loading” (2022) published in the Mechanics of Materials journal.

Many other submissions with outstanding publications on the shortlist show how difficult it was for the renowned scientists on the jury to make a selection.

Applicants for the 2022 ZwickRoell Science Award can submit their work by the end of December. More information can be found here.
